LIVE CD Installation (Ubuntu Installation)

Hi Geeks

Lets start getting into the topic.
before really getting into the topics of core programming and security stuffs.
we need to protect our systems from crash and self attacks to carry out our testing.
So we will be using a flavor of Linux to protect our system. not only this reason why we use
Linux but its also the matter that Linux have tonnes of softwares and tools to carry out
security testing. Basically my favorite flavor of Linux is  Fedora but for the beginners i would
prefer installing Ubuntu as it has good user interface and good repositories of softwares.
I hope that you people very well know how to install Ubuntu in your system and i think
many would be using Ubuntu operating system. anyway i wish to run through the installation
procedures that would help beginners to catch up with.

The latest available version of ubuntu is Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick)
you could download this version from http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download.
For people who are already using Ubuntu is prefer you to upgrade your OS to Ubuntu 10.10.

The installation process can be done in two ways.

1. installing using a Live CD
2. Installing from within existing windows operating system.

Installing from Live CD is very much similar to installing Windows.

before getting into the
advantages and disadvantages of both the installation procedure.
i will tell you the common procedures that are to be carried out in both the types.

1. select the appropriate drive in which the Linux operating system is to be installed.

For enhanced performance of the Linux operating system, manual drive selection
for installation is the best way.
               * Select the drive which you wanted to format.
               * first delete the partition.
               * now we have to set swap area for this go to add partition and set swap in formatting type .The size of the
swap memory should the twice the amount of your physical memory ( RAM ).
               * Next go to add partition again and set the remaining space to root directory ( / )
The partition should be formated with ext4 file system.

( Be careful while selecting the drive. ensure that you
dont have important data in the drive as the drive will be formatted to ext4 file system.
The drive which you choose to install Ubuntu should be a secondary partition. selecting
a primary partition will lead to conflict between the existing operation system and there will
   be trouble while booting.)

2. Rest of the procedures will be quite easy to follow. once the process is done you will be taken
   to your ubuntu home screen.

Installing from within windows operating system. To do this you need the help of a third party software
to actually load the image file of Ubuntu that you have downloaded. You can use daemon tool to load
the image file of Ubuntu in Virtual drive.( you can down load daemon tool from here http://www.filehippo.com/download_daemon_tools/).
just double click the setup file and it will guide you through the installation procedure. The procedure are
same as i have mentioned above.

Now let me tell the advantages and disadvantages of the two type of installation methods.
Installing Ubuntu from LiveCD is bit tricky but by installing it from Live CD you actually load the
operating system as external module. The boot loader of windows is replaced by more efficient
Ubuntu boot loader (GRUB) . This can well manage multiple operating system and it is more efficent
as it take minimal CPU usage and loads the required operating system very quickly.

Installing Ubuntu from within the windows is more simple and easy for the beginners to configure.
The down part is that in case of windows crash the Ubuntu operating system also cannot be accessed
as in the installation procedure the GRUB boot loader is not installed instead the windows boot loader
itself manages the boot management.

In case of crash of windows operating system the data can be easily accessed and retrieved through Ubuntu
if you have installed Ubuntu from Live CD. Even in case of boot loader failure. The boot loader alone can
be reinstalled using the Live CD but this is not possible if the Ubuntu is installed from within the windows OS.
